Amazon.com Review We have to tell you, wide-angle capabilities in a point-and-shoot digital camera are a revelation. Does this camera have that and more? Sure does. Dual lenses, so that it goes from a wide 23mm equivalent to a 117mm equivalent (6x zoom) without a protruding lens? Check. A large, beautiful LCD? Sure thing. An in-camera panoramic stitch that makes the most of both those features? Oh, yes.

The V570's wide-angle lens creates interesting effects.
(See larger image.)
The V570 is also incredibly compact. We carried it in a front pant pocket while traipsing around London, in a jacket pocket on the ski slopes, and in a cargo-pant pocket on mountain climbs. The V570 is very portable, and it's so inconspicuous in its small size that we felt secure with it in a front pant pocket while strap-hanging on Mexico City public transportation.

And then there are the pictures. We love that the wide-angle setting allows us to fit so much into the picture. It also creates some interesting stretching effects in close-ups, as with the photo of cakes at left. In addition, color reproduction is stunning: blue skies are faithfully rendered, bright colors remain bright even in low-light settings or flash photos, and contrast and tonal range are almost always as perfect as we could hope.

Panoramic mode is easy to use
and works beautifully.
The in-camera panoramic stitch mode is also extremely easy, and it produces exquisite results. The only down side to this feature is that it severely limits your other photographic options--the two or three images that make up the panoramas are taken at 3.2-megapixel resolution, and the flash won't fire while you're in panoramic mode. However, we found the resolution to be sufficient in the end, and reserving panoramic use for well-lit scenarios did not prove such a hardship. (Make sure to check out other customers' photos, taken in a range of lighting situations, via the link above.)

Finally, the camera's video function performs admirably. A friend used his V570 to film a football team taking the field, and both image and sound were top notch. And the large, bright 2.5-inch LCD does its duty well as a photo and video viewer. Separate buttons allow you to zoom in on sections of a photo and navigate within one picture or all the pictures on your card. (Photos can also be viewed in a multi-up mode, which displays nine at a time, or in a slideshow that can be shown on the screen or on your television.)

This is not to say that the camera doesn't have a few imperfections. It must be docked for charging the battery or downloading images. In photos, bright lights are occasionally surrounded by a purple fringe. The power and scene mode buttons are on the small side, and there's no way to prevent the camera from displaying just-taken images for five seconds after the shot (though you can take another photo immediately by pressing the shutter-release button twice).

These are small gripes about an otherwise stellar camera, though. We've found the V570 to be the best combination of unique features, impressive styling, and overall user-friendliness of any cameras currently available, and we cannot recommend it enough.--Sarah Sternau

Pros

  • Wide-angle lens produces beautiful photos
  • Color reproduction is amazing
  • In-camera panoramic stitch works wonderfully
Cons

  • 5-second post-capture review can't be turned off
  • Occasional purple fringe
  • Limited settings options in panoramic mode

"Four Years of Rugged Use." 2010-02-16
By S. Cusick (Columbia, MD USA)
I bought the V570 four years ago and it's still going strong after many family parties and trips out of town. I have no reason to buy a new camera as this one still works well. When I can get a 5MP cell phone with acceptable optics, I will probably retire the 570, but until then I like this compact and very capable camera.

 "Amazing Camera." 2008-12-24
By Katie Dickerson (Hudson, WI USA)
I looooooved this camera. I previously owned the V570 and when it died i was thrilled to get this one. I used it excessively for exactly a year, come to think of it. It's very easy to use, the features are easily accessible, and the pictures are fantastic. I'm a huuuge fan of the ultra-wide-angle lens and now that the time has come for me to get a new camera I'm extremely disappointed that kodak discontinued the line. Buy this camera, it's worth it. (Don't pay the 450 new though, it wasn't even that much new directly from Kodak when it was new technology.)

Bottom line, great camera.

 "Good Camera" 2010-03-07
By D. Miller (Kansas)
For the cost, this is a good camera for taking a few pictures every now and then to capture a few memories. Its compact and easy to use. It is not going to give you high quality pictures though. It is almost impossible to take pictures of anything that is moving - i.e. children who can't stand still. I use this camera for pictures that I put on a digital picture frame.

 "Looove this camera!!" 2009-12-14
By Kelsey E
This camera is great. I got it for Christmas of 2008 (also at a Target Black Friday sale for $79.99) and I do not regret the purchase at all! I'm often amazed that my little camera can take such clear pictures and it's been very fun to have.

The shooting modes are great and the video is very clear. However, I've noticed then when I'm taking a video the camera lags bit. It's hard to describe, but when I move the camera it takes maybe 1/6 of a second to show the move on the screen. It hasn't been a problem for me at all and I really don't mind it, but I thought I should mention it.

Occasionally I end up with dark pictures, but most of the time that's due to the lighting conditions. No matter how expensive or amazing your camera is, you don't typically get good pictures in bad lighting. It's just a fact. The outdoor pictures are fantastic though.

I've had no problems with the battery life, and I don't really have to charge it all that often.

One thing that I don't like are the buttons on top of the camera. The flash button and power button are both small, and they both feel exactly the same so I often press the wrong button when trying to turn it on quickly. Again, not a huge problem, but worth mentioning I think.

All in all, this is a GREAT camera. I absolutely love it, and I'm sorry that other reviewers haven't had as great of an experience. I definitely recommend it and I would buy it again if given the chance.

This was an OK camera and did basically what it was supposed to do. Found the battery pack didn't last very long and the dock setup bulky.  "Have owned for one year - started out fairly well, then major battery issues" 2009-08-19
By Kenny Grimm (Arizona)
We have had several digital cameras over the years and have above average knowledge/experience with digital cameras and their functions/capabilities. This camera we received as a gift a year ago. We never checked the price until today and I am honestly shocked that it is priced at $200. While a good deal for a 12MP 5x zoom camera, we were convinced it was a worthless piece of junk after having had constant issues with the batteries and processing times. I was THIS close to taking a hammer to it.

When we first received the camera, it worked fairly well (although I was never overly impressed with picture quality). However about 6 months into it, we couldn't even take one picture because the batteries never lasted. I would put in brand new batteries (tried several brands, Alkaline, NiMH, rechargable - YOU NAME IT) and the camera would barely even turn on. The light would be green initially, but would immediately turn to red and the camera would turn off. It kills me that before I discovered this problem, I probably through away quite a few perfectly good batteries thinking that they were bad.

What's interesting is that we finally put this camera to rest in our junk drawer. It has sat there for two full months until today when I pulled it out as a last resort. And what do you know it turned on immediately and I have taken about 20 pictures in the past 3 days without battery failure. I am still disappointed in processing time for deleting photos and taking new photos, but I am just shocked that it's turning on at all.

The only conclusion I can come to is that there is some sort of internal battery/memory that just died on us and maybe it needed to be re-charged or rested. Sounds crazy, but that's all I can figure out.

I'm going to hold onto this until it dies again, but overall there's no way I would recommend this camera. I suppose I could have received a faulty one, but after an experience like this I wouldn't recommend it and now I question the Kodak brand in general.

"I can't believe Kodak would release a camera like this" 2009-08-06
By Lawrence R. Hudson (Sonoma County, CA USA)
Still photos are fine. But I bought this camera for the 720p HD video. Unfortunately the digital image stabilization system overcorrects for the slightest camera movement, the result being uncontrollably jittery and shaky videos (left to right and back again) even when the camera's actual movement was minor. The effect is that instead of dampening the effect of camera shake it amplifies it. And the stabilization feature cannot be shut off in video mode. Kodak's help line says it is a feature, not a defect. As of early August 2009 there is no firmware update for this "feature." The simplest non-stabilized camera produces better videos.

 "Very unhappy" 2009-03-24
By LEOH (Brazil, In)
After 10 months of use with this camera, it stopped working.I submitted it for repair by Kodak at which time they told me it was void of warranty because of corrosion inside the camera. I asked for more details, they told me it had water damage. I explained it has never been wet. They told me that spending time in an air conditioned car then going out into the heat of outdoors would cause moister build up inside the camera. There is no way to correct this issue and the camera is worthless. I paid $250 for this camera for 10 months of use. Very dissatisfied.

 "Garbage... pure rubbish!" 2010-01-07
By David Gianetti (Trumbull, CT USA)
My wife and I wanted to replace our aged Sony 3.2 MP camera. We were after something with good features, nice picture quality, and a large lcd for viewing and picture-taking. This camera did have all that and, at the time, got pretty decent reviews. We purchased ours and were quite pleased with it initially. Then it began to go from bad to worse:

1. My wife complained the pictures were blurry initially. I didn't have this problem, but believe it was due to a relatively long delay between pressing the button and taking the picture. An annoyance and not a concern if you use a steady hand.

2. If you are taking pictures indoors they'll be ok... just ok. However, the low light picture quality is not very good at all.

3. The final straw is quite common if you search the web: The camera won't turn on and won't charge. You try to turn the camera on and it will open the lens then beep and turn off. Attaching the camera to the charger (USB cable to a power cube or computer), the charging light comes on but stays steady green indicating a full charge. After several minutes, it goes off. That's it. There are many complaints about this and Kodak's only suggestion is you send it to them for service: at the cost of $88 plus shipping.

So, we're now out close to $200 and back to using our trusty Sony. It's a shame since the camera did have a nice display (as we wanted) and (I thought) the USB charging would be a very handy feature.

I have had this camera for a couple weeks and used it for a Dodger Stadium trip last night- Manny Ramirez Bobblehead Night!

The construction of the camera seems a bit cheap, but so far the quality of the pictures has been pretty good. I wasn't expecting a whole lot for under $100 but it takes nice crisp photos.

I used the video feature last night when Manny hit a grand slam and they uploaded just fine to my computer.

 "Battery Hog" 2009-11-23
By Barbara Torrey Clegg (Lincoln, NE)
While this camera takes pretty decent pictures, it's going to end up costing you quite a bit more than the initial price of the camera. It goes through regular AA batteries like crazy! You can't even get through one family event without needing to replace the batteries.

The camera dock kit that is recommended for this camera is the Series 3 kit, but it comes with a battery that doesn't fit this camera! Isn't that nice of Kodak? I contacted Kodak about this issue and they just said they were sorry but I'd have to shell out another $25 to buy the correct battery. Actually, because this camera goes through batteries so fast, I'll have to buy TWO at $25 so I'll always have one at the ready when the other dies. So ... to have a camera that works when you want it to, you have to spend around $200 for the camera, $50 for the dock kit, and $50 for the batteries -- $300. For that you could get a fabulous Fujifilm camera, like our S5100, that uses AA batteries and they last for several events!

I wouldn't recommend this camera, and I wouldn't recommend anything by Kodak because they obviously don't care about their customers.

 "Nice little camera" 2009-09-12
By Troutrageous1 (Limerick, PA)
After a lot of debate on what digital camera to purchase, we finally decided on this one to replace our old Kodak (DX7440) and have been very pleased. These Kodak cameras are very easy to use, with just the right amount of options for somebody that is not simply defined to the "auto" settings. My wife uses this camera to take product photography for her website, and it comes out extremely crisp, clear, and colorful. The HD video is at least on par with the Kodak Zi6 (another nice little product we own). The one thing I was disappointed with was that the battery that came with this camera is not rechargeable, so you'll need to make that additional purchase as well.

"Easy to use, Beautiful Pix!" 2009-08-12
By W. Bills (Colorado)
I have owned this camera since January & have LOVED it! It takes beautiful pictures. The images are sharp & clean, the colors vibrant. It has been easy to use. I particularly like the ISO feature for shooting in low-light situations. When we were at Walt Disney World, we got some amazing fireworks shots. There are lots of different shooting modes. The only negative is that it comes with a CRV3 battery ... those are the ones that are NOT rechargeable. So I did invest in a charger plus two rechargeable batteries. The batteries last a long, long time before needing to be charged again. I would definitely recommend this camera to friends & family.

"Must buy Kodak rechargeable batteries" 2009-07-08
By R. Wray
We got two of these for my boys and BOTH of them after 3 months would not take more than 1-2 pictures with FRESH AA batteries. Called Kodak and they said we needed to use the Kodak KLIC-8000 rechargeables with them (as RECOMMENDED on the packaging). We fought with them saying that those batteries aren't recommended, but now REQUIRED for this camera.

Anyway, we got them (having no other choice) and sure enough they do work now... just disappointing to thave to spend an additional $50 to get them working.

Other than that, I think these are good cameras if you can find them for less than $120. Good HD video... good overall pictures quality. Not in the top tier of cameras... but hey, we are talking about Kodak, right?

I just purchased the Kodak M863 digital camera and I couldn't be happier with it. It is easy to use and takes very good pictures. I have one very small problems with the camera. The user manual could have a been a little more informative. Not to worry though, you can get all the information you need on Kodak's web site. They also have a great support team . They can be contacted via the telephone and you actually get a real person to answer all your questions. This is a great little camera and for the price you can't beat it. Buy with confidence.

 "Horribly Grainy" 2010-01-10

I bought the first Kodak series digital cameras in the 1990's - when they were only 1 megapixel.

(Have used Film SLRs previous to that- and owned a few digital cameras since)- just to preface this review with my experience level.

Stay away from this camera. It gives horribly grainy photo results- and generates jpeg file sizes that are half the size of my Canon S550 (which is only 5 megapixels- yes file sizes vary based on subject matter- but not by a factor of HALF the size- when the megapixels are much greater). Went through the manual- online help, and phoned Kodak. Confirmed manual quality settings for sharpness, High color, ISO, 8.1 megapixel, and aspect ratio- and still.. marginal/poor image quality. Confirmed- it is not a lighting issue either.

You'd think an 8.1 megapixel camera from Kodak would yield good photos. Well.. think again. I wish I bought something else and didn't waste precious memories with this crummy camera.

"One of The best I have Ever Purchased" 2009-12-14

I picked this camera up to replace a Canon sd100 that I absolutely could not stand and let me tell you I have owned some really expensive cameras and this little camera stood right up there with them,I don't have one bad thing to say about this camera. It took EXCELLENT Pictures and EXCELLENT video. The pictures were so clear and all you had to do was just press the button. It took the pictures that fast to. I was extremely please and impressed with this little Kodak.

I had this camera 14 months and it worked great. One day last week it wouldn't turn on. All it did was pop the lens out and then right back in. I did some research and found this is a common problem with this model. Called Kodak and they told me to pound sand. Just a word to the wise. Avoid this camera...

 "Poor design" 2009-12-08

I purchased this camera in February 2009. In late November the camera stopped working. Shipped it off to Kodak's repair service "United Camera and Binocular Repair." Long story short, warranty repairs denied because of corrosion inside of the camera. ??? The camera did get a lot of use, however, it was never abused or exposed to excessive moisture (A few rain drops now and then...but thats it). I honestly expected this camera to last 5-6 years and when it died on Thankgiving afternoon I was a little upset that I was unable to capture any photos. I am even more upset that because of some design flaw that allowed moisture into the case, Kodak refuses to honor the 1 year warranty on this product.

Because of only mediocre picture quality, I probably would not have purchased another Kodak, but couple average picture quality along with a failure to honor the product warranty, I will never purchase another Kodak product again.
