"Survived the hands of orphans in Africa" 2010-03-29
By Leslie (Everett, Washington United States)
Have kids? Fumble a lot? Just want an extra durable camera? Then get this one. My Kodak has been dropped countless times over and over again by kids in an orphanage who all fight over who gets to take pictures. Though it had a crack in the frame, it has not stopped working, which was quite the relief when I was first mortified and watched it drop.

The camera is just as good as any other point-and-shoot camera out there for those of us who aren't professionals or aren't extremely picky and just want a small camera to carry around. Sometimes indoor lighting doesn't work too well, but otherwise I have been extremely happy with the outcome of my pictures.

But seriously, what makes me give great reviews is the incredible durability I have found in the camera. It's been dropped all over South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe... this thing survives rock, sand, dirt, and grimy hands.

"Lens focus noise is my biggest concern." 2010-02-01
By Byran
Likes:

- Small enough to carry in pocket.

- Battery life okay but I'd suggest getting a second as backup.

- Focuses and shoots fast. (already on)

- Smart capture usually takes the best/easiest photos.

- Zoomable while recording video.

- Long video record times. 30 mins. I think.

- Hi resolution video.

Dislikes:

- Sometimes, if the battery dies while the lens is extended it gets stuck out until you can get power to it again. When that happens, I usually wait a minute for the battery to regain a little juice then quickly turn it on and off to get the lens retracted. This is a bad design flaw. My old Kodak EasyShare DX6490 4MP Digital Camera with 10X Optical Zoom was smart enough to not allow you to extend the lens without enough juice and always retracted it just before dieing.

- The lens is starting to make focusing noises after 2 months. My DX6490 did the same thing after 1+ years. You could hear the noise in recored videos.

- Takes too long to shoot from being off and takes too long to turn off.

- Switching between modes is a little slow because you have to go into the mode menu (dedicated button).

- I assumed you'd be able to select aperture & shutter priority with this camera but you cannot. You can use presets like macro and landscape to suggest what you want but it's not the level of control I was looking for.

Disclaimer: I've only owned Kodak EasyShare cameras. So I have no experience with other brands. I've liked my past Kodaks enough to continue to buy them.

 "Not worth it :(" 2010-01-31
By Beachgirl
I typically love kodak and this is roughly my 5th Kodak Easy Share and I have been satisified with all of them. My last one broke after 1 1/2 years so I bought another one thinking it was a fluke. My current Easyshare M1093 did not live up to the quality I expect from Kodak. The majority of the pictures come out grainy and it does not take good pictures unless lit brightly. I switch to many different modes and none seem to help. Don't waste your money.

 "Great picutres but ..." 2010-01-18
By Ah Bel (Ottawa, Canada)
The qualify of the photos is very impressive, esp. with people. Really just point and shoot, and you get great shots. However, I really am disappointed with the following:

1. to switch to video takes too many steps

2. it is very easy to delete all photos while you are just trying to delete one

3. WORST, the Easyshare software (version 7.0) that came with the camera didn't work at all. Even after downloading the latest & greatest (version 8.0) from the Kodak website, it's still doesn't work. I chatted with Kodak support for like an hour, trying many things, and eventually, they just asked me to "clean up" (not just uninstall, but eradicate) Kodak Easyshare, and try the whole thing again. I haven't have the time to do so, so I'm just taking my SD card out to copy the photos/videos over for now.

Compare to Canon (I had a Canon A750), the Kodak Easyshare software is obviously & sadly inferior.

"Perfection In an Imperfect World" 2008-06-23
By William P. Wilson (Knoxville, Tennessee)
Good Grief! What do you expect out of a low-priced camera! No, this is not a professional

let's shoot the Playmate of the Month camera. You can get those for around a thousand or so USD.

This is a versatile-use-it-out of the box camera for people just getting into digital photograhy or for those who

who want a digital camera without selling the farm. I've shot with one for about two years under some demanding

conditions. It has never failed even after it was dropped and took two bounces on top of the highest mountain in Maine.

It has always performed better than I was led to believe it would. It is not cheaply made even though it is made of plastic--it's sturdy

--no hinges have snaaped off--the lense hasn't dropped off.

Look..the camera snobs are writing misleading reviews about this camera and others. Give the people looking for a camera a break. No!

This not a Nikon, Cannon, or a Leica. It is one hell of an inexpensive digital camera that makes picture taking fun.

 "Zoom is horrible" 2008-04-12
By M. Smith
I don't care if it had 100x zoom. That's not gonna matter if you cant tell what you were taking a picture of anyways. Its good for some family photos, but only if they're within 5 feet of you. The zoom function is pretty bad. Its a fun camera for a kid though. The price is just about right at about 100 dollars. It is simple to use and download off of. The zoom is just horrible though.

"picture quality soso, sturdiness superior" 2008-03-20
By kmir (Nashville, TN US)
I just want to add to the already available reviews: I agree with most what has been said here. Picture quality is quite below average. The same scene, just seconds apart, and you might get a different coloring in the picture (e.g. picture one is a little reddish, picture two is a little bluish). This is not too bad, though, if you just want a "I-visited-the-Brandenburg-Gate-with-Grandma" picture. I do use a Canon Digital Rebel XT for pictures that I want to turn out nice, but most of the times, the Kodak isn't too bad. If it is a little bad, mostly in low light conditions.

However: This camera is superior in sturdiness. I have taken it everywhere. I take it skiing and I fall with it in my jacket pocket, I drop it - anything. So it will probably make it a nice camera for kids (if you can explain to them that they need to wait the 0.7 seconds until it makes the "click" sound). I wouldn't buy it here, though. Go to ebay, you can get one for $30 there.

"I love and hate this camera" 2008-04-27
By Kevin Christy (Orange County, CA)
It's a wide angle camera that you can fit in your pocket--so it's great that way. The in-camera stitch is nice, and battery life is very impressive. But there's some real annoyances too. My beefs with this camera:

* No control over image compression: Kodak has one setting and in my opinion it's far too highly compressed. Forget about being able to take a standard shot and focus in on some interesting detail. They're all lost in compression artifacts. Come on, Kodak: how hard is it to have a RAW mode? And why have a 7MP camera when the file sizes are the same as the 5MP?

* Low light performance is, to put it bluntly, crap. You'll need a tripod, which sort of defeats the purpose of having a camera you can fit in your pocket.

* The flash is harsh.

* The processor is far too slow for any kind of sequence shots.

* Even though the camera has a text mode, it's not very useful. Keep this in mind: if you want to shoot a sign or a map with small print--which I often do on my job--you will find this a very, very tricky process to get right. You have to have good lighting to pull it off, and this is where a RAW mode would really help.

For the money, if you want to do wide-angle outdoor shots with a camera you can fit in your pocket, you could be really happy with this unit. I've certainly received a lot of compliments on the quality of some of the photos I've taken with this (see therealkezekiel on flickr), but they're all on outdoor shots in decent to good light.

 "Good Camera" 2009-12-08
By Haze Girl (MN)
I bought this on "Black Friday" 2007 and it is a good camera. I'm now selling it because of a few things. The first being personal, although I don't mind the size, I found that I take less pictures because of it's larger body. Second because of the shorter battery life, and third being the lag time. That stuff is in all of the other reviews. Now that I read these other reviews and see that it's holding it's price I almost want to keep it. The optical stuff is great and it does take awesome crisp pictures! It shows almost no signs of wear and tear after 2 years. The body is very lightweight, but it is sturdy. And yes the lens cap comes off all the time, so what. I found a case that fits the camera and extra batteries perfectly. Samsonite is the name on it it is square-ish in shape and has zipper closure with velcro. They were seen at Wal-marts everywhere! Not hard to find. The display looks a little grainy, but I assure you that the pictures come out fabulous!

To comment on some other reviewer's problems with the LCD screen turning off. I had this problem only when batteries were almost dead. And for a while I thought it was broken for good. However I was smart enough to find a little button after putting in new batteries that turned it back on and I have never had a problem since. I assume that I pushed the button by accident while taking a picture, very frustrating, but easily solved. Turn your LCD back on!

This camera is great, loved it, have had it for a year and a half. Went to take pictures with it today (used it fine yesterday) and the LCD screen just shut off, wont come back on. I got it as an after christmas mark down, so I only spent 180 dollars on it, but still, I never expected it to do this. I still have my 2 previous EasyShare cameras and they work fine. Heard from a couple other people that this has happened to them too. I don't recommend this particular camera, but I do like the Kodak brand.

"Worst money I have ever spent" 2009-04-02
By G. Thornton
I like the camera, and it has some nice features, but it is practically unusable because it goes through batteries so quickly. I left the camera POWERED OFF for a week or so with a fresh set of alkalines in it and when I went to use it the batteries were completely drained! I've taken less than 100 pictures with it (no video yet) and I have probably changed the batteries at least 8 times.

There are a lot of words that come to mind when I think of this camera, but I can't think of any that would not be bleeped out here.

I wish I could get my money back. STAY AWAY!!!

I bought this camera about a year and a half ago. It takes amazing pictures, but the lag time between taking one and another is horrible. I have two small children and with the long wait it really has cost me alot of great could-have-been shots. It also goes through batteries very quickly... I am constantly changing them... even with lithium. I would not purchase this camera again, even though the pictures are great.

"You get what you pay for" 2010-04-21
By Cynthia A. Correa (Augusta, GA)
I really like the look of this camera and it's super easy to use. The joystick pad it nice and easy to use. Overall, I like this camera, but I wouldn't by it again or recommend it to someone else for these reasons:

First, I can't stand rechargeable batteries, they never stay charged and when I really need new batteries, I can't just go buy some. But that's very personal, some people have had great experiences with rechargeable.

Second, if the batteries are low, the whole thing shuts down. It can't run the battery to the end of it's life, if it gets low, it won't function. So like you'll take a really great shot and the it will shut down and so you'll turn it back on to see the shot and it's not there. Soooo frustrating!! If it had an option to turn off the LCD screen and just use a viewfinder that would probably help, but wait! there's no viewfinder.

Third, the printing on the buttons rub off. I really don't even remember which button is play back and which one is menu, I just have to keep pressing buttons until I hit the right one. What ever ink or whatever it is they use is really poor quality.

And lastly, don't drop it, take it to the beach, get ANY water near it, or let your kids touch it too much because any little thing will make it not work for a few days, but luckily, it always comes back, when you don't need it.

"Really nice, but has some flaws." 2009-07-10
By Arrowyn (USA)
I've never owned a digital camera and I'm not a photo-taking kind of person, but I didn't have a camera at all. So I did my research (I thought) and took the plunge. This camera is really everything I was looking for (and much more), except for one thing. The "joy stick" button that you use to go through the menus, review the pictures, and probably a lot more that I don't know about, is less than half the size of my little fingernail, and I don't have big hands. I had to use my fingernail to move it and, most of the time, it didn't move in the direction I wanted it to (didn't get to the function I wanted) because my fingernail was just a little too much toward another direction. I hope that makes sense. I REALLY wouldn't recommend this camera for anyone who has large, or even medium-size, fingers.

In addition, while I was setting up my preferences, I noticed that the battery needed to be charged again. I had fully charged it when I got it. I don't know how long I was playing with it before I noticed this, and I don't know if this is usual, but I thought I'd mention it.

One of the preferences I set up was for the camera to turn itself off after not being used for 3 minutes. After I was finished playing with it, I pressed the button to manually turn it off, and it wouldn't turn off. I didn't think about taking the battery out (novice, remember?), so I just left it alone. It turned itself off after about 4 hours! From then on, it turned on and off just as it was supposed to.

Anyway, except for those things, the camera was great! The 3" display is terrific. There's virtually no delay between pressing the button and the picture being taken. The pictures are good, but I'm really no judge. Upon reading the instruction manual, I found that the camera had many, many more features than I ever anticipated needing, but it's nice to know that they're there.

I guess it's back to doing more research.

"survived 48 hrs under the snow" 2009-04-10

I had this camera for over 6 years and it is a working horse. yes, it eats lots of batteries, but I ended up having two sets of rechargeables and only rely on regular AA during travel. And this winter, as the title says, it survived 48 hours left outdoor under snow. I was terrified - we couldn't find it until the snow melted, so I started "shopping" for a new camera, but never purchased one, and then we found it and it still works, takes great pictures, no evidence of any damage to the quality. maybe one day it will brake, but for now, it remains my pride possession. need I say more?

I got this camera over 5 years ago for Christmas. And guess what? I still have it. I have taken over 10,000 pictures over this span of time and it still works wonderfully. The color in scenery shots is very real and action photos come out crisp. With a 512 Mb SD card, it holds over 600 pictures and one nice feature that is not the case with some newer models, the card can come out without having to reset the time and date saving precious picture taking minutes. One note, it is (in a lot of cases) best to turn off the flash (which is done with the push of a button) for most shots.

"Best camera I ever bought!" 2009-11-08
By Half Full (San Diego, CA)
I actually purchased this camera about 4 years ago (for a lower price than listed). Since then, I've loved this camera. It's super easy to use and takes great quality shots. I recently made a trip to Monterey, CA and have postcard quality pics to remember it by. Even inside a dimly lit aquarium I managed to get beautiful shots. I appreciate the fact that it "rates" my shots via a small hand-like icon, based on clarity. Green for good, yellow for fair and red for poor. All in all, it's a great buy. And to all the reviewers who can't understand what we're raving about...you probably just got a dud. It's been known to happen.

Not a bad camera, bonus is the rechargeable battery, multi-targeting when shooting. Good pictures for a small camera.

"It's good only for a couple of months" 2009-08-22
By Yue Xu
My M763 was good only for two months and then both the LCD creeen and the pictures taken turned pinkish whenever the temperature was high (ove 80C). I had to cool the camera down to get rid of the pink color. Now the pink color stays forever.

Obviously a bad quality camera.

 "Garbage... pure rubbish!" 2010-01-07
By David Gianetti (Trumbull, CT USA)
My wife and I wanted to replace our aged Sony 3.2 MP camera. We were after something with good features, nice picture quality, and a large lcd for viewing and picture-taking. This camera did have all that and, at the time, got pretty decent reviews. We purchased ours and were quite pleased with it initially. Then it began to go from bad to worse:

1. My wife complained the pictures were blurry initially. I didn't have this problem, but believe it was due to a relatively long delay between pressing the button and taking the picture. An annoyance and not a concern if you use a steady hand.

2. If you are taking pictures indoors they'll be ok... just ok. However, the low light picture quality is not very good at all.

3. The final straw is quite common if you search the web: The camera won't turn on and won't charge. You try to turn the camera on and it will open the lens then beep and turn off. Attaching the camera to the charger (USB cable to a power cube or computer), the charging light comes on but stays steady green indicating a full charge. After several minutes, it goes off. That's it. There are many complaints about this and Kodak's only suggestion is you send it to them for service: at the cost of $88 plus shipping.

So, we're now out close to $200 and back to using our trusty Sony. It's a shame since the camera did have a nice display (as we wanted) and (I thought) the USB charging would be a very handy feature.

 "Do Not Buy!" 2009-12-19
By John Pearce (Baton Rouge, LA)
I received this camera as gift last Christmas and within a year and a couple of uses it broke. Every time I tried to turn the camera on, after a few seconds it just shuts off. The battery is fully charged and it still does not work. I do not recommend buying this camera at all.

 "It is Junk" 2009-11-02
By maggie (Mass)
I rarely used it. Within one month it froze. Kodak sends it united camera for repair via warranty. I barely touched it in 12 months. Just on two vacations. Now it is doing the same thing and Kodak says too bad. Pay for the warranty. Don't buy it. I will not buy Kodak again

"Nice little cheap point and shoot" 2009-07-23
By Scott J. Frasnelly
I have had this camera for a couple weeks and used it for a Dodger Stadium trip last night- Manny Ramirez Bobblehead Night!

The construction of the camera seems a bit cheap, but so far the quality of the pictures has been pretty good. I wasn't expecting a whole lot for under $100 but it takes nice crisp photos.

I used the video feature last night when Manny hit a grand slam and they uploaded just fine to my computer.

 "Great little camera" 2009-11-13
By fiddler (02138)
I love this camera and use it for a back up. Takes fine photos. One really nice feature is that there is no lens that zooms out when you turn it on. 6mp is also a size easier to manipulate for many purposes, except giant blow ups.

 "Falling appart." 2009-07-04
By B. Levitt
This camera worked perfect for a couple of years and then started to fall apart - literally. Some little screws fell off and camera started to lose parts. Repair would cost more than new camera, so I ought new one, not KODAK this time.

 "No Viewfinder" 2009-05-25
By Frances H. Mullane (Jupiter, FL United States)
I have had this camera for years. I love it EXCEPT it has no viewfinder and one is totally dependent on the 3" screen. In bright outdoors conditions it is close to impossible to really line up a good photo. I am thinking of replacing it.

 "2 years with Kodak V610 camera" 2008-10-16
By S. Lee
I just dropped the camera and broke the lens so I'm looking/researching for another camera. I have been using it extensively for the past 2 years so have much experience with it.

Positives:

-panoramic 3 shots stitched into one is fabulous

-takes good video shots and can be zoomed in/out during recording

-great color in sunny outdoor light

-10x optical zoom in a small, lightweight package

Negatives:

-occasional mild distortion of subjects (making it look wider) it doesn't always happen but have noticed it on some photos

-bad photos in low light such as indoor, sunsets, or night shots.

-more blurring with fast moving subjects compared to other cameras i've used before

-flash does not reach very far so if you need to use flash you need to be quite close and it often washes out the subject.

-time consuming to change settings rather than a quick button or wheel since you need to go to the menu and toggle around which can be annoying if you want to quickly take a photo

Overall great if you want a small slim profile with 10x zoom, but i do not plan on purchasing it again since I want better photos for low light situations.

 "Disappointed" 2008-05-28
By Kim (Florida)
I purchased the Kodak EasyShare V610 about 1 year ago. I am someone that wants to point and shoot with little to no thought about settings or manual adjustment. I chose this camera mainly because of the 10x zoom in such a small package. The 10x zoom has been a great feature, and I have gotten some great shots outside. However,I have missed 3 major events including my son preschool graduation, his Terrific kids award ceremony and his final Kindergarten performance. Not a single picture turned out for any of these inside events. Since I am totally an auto mode user and never customize my settings, I questioned if this was due to my error. However, after coming back and reading reviews, I see that this is an issue with this model not having image stabilization. Only one year later, I am now looking for another camera (preferably small), with at least 10x zoom, that works well in auto mode, has high FPS and user friendly software (I wasn't crazy about Kodak's software). I cannot afford to miss anymore important memories.
