Customer Buzz
"An excellent camera that takes great pictures & video!" 2009-09-25
By Peach R. Trail (King, NC USA)
PROS: [1] Shirt pocket small. [2] Very good low light video. [3] Good low light photos. [4] Long battery life using rechargeable battery packs - they are a must! [5] Will shoot in a 720P HD video mode (for wide screens only). [6] Excellent 5X zoom lens. [7] Zoom and auto focus do work while filming in all video modes. [9] Very good mono sound quality (not stereo).

Minor Cons: [1] A little heavy to be so small. [2] Will not use AA rechargeables except for Lithium Ion versions - period! [3] Does not deal very well with very high brightness (ambient) light such as on the beach on a clear day at noon the video tends to bleach and tint a little purple. [4] Has an 8 GB size limit on the SDHC cards.

Major Con: No "peep" site to view through in bright light conditions - the image on the display gets washed out by bright sun light and it makes sighting the camera very difficult at best under those conditions.

My Review: I was looking for a small light weight camcorder to take on motorcycle trips in the mountains. I have a Digital Video Tape movie camera that works very well but is getting old and requires a long transfer process to get the video from the camera to a PC for processing into DVD's. I was also taking a small digital camera with me for still images. I saw this 14 MP still camera on display at a local store. It was hooked up to a power supply so it could be played with. I was amazed at the video capabilities the camera seemed to have considering that it is a still camera - including 720P HD wide screen video. I purchased the camera after assurance from the store clerk that I could return it with no hassle if it did not perform to my expectations.

I have now been using the camera for about 7 weeks and I have been using it a lot for both video and still photography. The camera has lived up to or exceeded most of my expectations. It uses HC version SD cards up to 8 GB. You can put in a larger capacity card such as a 16 GB HC version SD card but it shows it and uses it as an 8 GB card. Believe me; you can put a lot of stuff on an 8 GB card with this camera. Buy one spare card and a spare rechargeable battery pack and you are good to go. When using the camera in movie mode, an 8 GB card is good for 59 minutes of high quality 640X480 video or 29 minutes of 720P HD wide screen video. The movies are recorded in the 30 fps QuickTime .MOV format. The best player to use for viewing the .MOV format is a free download called a "VLC video player" The QuickTime player does not play the 720P HD wide screen movies very well at all!! The "VLC player" plays anything you throw at it. Do an Internet Search for the player. It is well worth installing and it is free.

Regular AA rechargeable batteries of any kind other than Lithium Ion will not work. They will be good for less than 5 minutes of use because of the difference in output voltages between types.

The camera has a very wide selection of picture formats and sizes plus 3 video formats. The 640X480 format is best for playback on a regular old square style TV. The 720P wide screen HD setting works great for the new wide screen TV's and should only be used if you are planning on showing your videos on a wide screen. I have both types of TV's and the video is as good as the video from my DVT Camcorder using either format. Be sure to use the 640X480 format if you have an older "square" picture. Only use the 720P wide screen HD setting if you are going to view your video DVD on an HD wide screen TV because the picture will be compressed on a regular square type of TV.

I used Roxio version 7 to burn DVD videos for my DVD players. The videos made with this camera have all turned out to be quite good. NOTE: If you are going to burn video taken in the 720P format you must have software that works with the 720P wide screen format. Most of the older version softwares including Roxio 7 will only render and correctly burn the 640X480 video.

Note: I did not install the included Kodak software, I only installed the camera driver and software on the included software CD that was required to make the camera hook up to the PC. Install the software first. You can also just use a card reader to transfer the pictures and movies to your PC without having to install anything from the included software CD. The card reader will have to be one that recognizes an HC type SD card. I have had problems in the past with Kodak software trying to hose other picture software on my PC. If you don't have other picture software already on your PC then the Easy Share software will probably be quite well.

I have been very satisfied with this camera and would recommend it to anyone who wants a very small camera at a very low price that has both very good picture and video capability and quality.

In the box was the camera, a Lithium Ion non-rechargeable battery, a rechargeable Lithium Ion battery with a charger, a USB cable, and the software
